The Science Behind 'The Zoomies'

If you haven't heard of 'The Zoomies' before, I'm about to put a big smile on your face. You may have seen them before and not realised what they were. While they vary slightly, it essentially looks like your dog just had 10 cups of coffee and is attempting to be everywhere, all at once. Apart from being one of the best dog things ever, they're also known as Frenetic Random Activity Periods (FRAPs) and they're completely normal in most dogs. They are thought to be a kind of stress or energy release and often seen in dogs with pent-up energy, such as when they wake up in the morning, or later in the day if they haven't been able to get through all of their daily 'crazy' in other ways.

Generally they’re completely safe but make sure to check their surrounds (just in case anything could be dangerous for a dog at top speed) and if you’re worried that they’re stressful for your dog, check with a veterinary behaviourist or qualified dog trainer to make sure there’s not something else going on.
