Kelpie with Swiss Balls Treibball Training

Treibball Training

What is Treibball?

Also known as ‘Urban Herding’ this sport is great for dogs of all sizes, ages, shapes and breeds. Essentially it’s a positive-reinforcement sport that involves dogs ‘herding’ (pushing with their nose) swiss balls into a goal! You can see this sport in action at a competitive level in this video featuring FDSA Trainer Melissa Breau and her dog Riley (ATA Champions).

As seen on TV3’s The Project (see video below), I have been developing my skillset in the last year to train dogs for Treibball and I was working with a gorgeous Kelpie called Dala (pictured) who came very close to being able to compete at a Novice level! I will now be working with my newest recruit Storm (GSD x Husky) to work on the foundation skills again and see how we go!

Classes are coming!

Due to the coronavirus, I’m looking to launch online classes in the very near future. You can read more about this here LINK or get in touch LINK to be notified when they’re being launched.

Why Treibball?

Treibball offers many great skills and benefits for dogs beyond the sport itself:

  • Four paws on the floor (helps with dogs who jump up)

  • Impulse control

  • Increased focus

  • Improved engagement with you outdoors

  • Canine enrichment

  • Low impact sport (low potential for injury)

It’s a wonderful way for your dogs to get physical AND mental exercise, as well as introducing them to training processes and the awesomeness that is positive reinforcement!

While this can be taken to a competitive level, I’m also keen to introduce people to this sport as a fun way to train with your dog, even if you just want to end up playing with one ball in your backyard with the kids!
